How to get content into your SmartChat™ using the Storytell Chrome extension
Here's a handy way to gather content from websites using our Chrome Extension.
- Haven't got our Chrome Extension yet? No worries! You can easily install it from the Chrome Store using this link.
- Once you've got that sorted, head over to the website you wish to add to your SmartChat™.
- Next, open up the Chrome extension and give it a moment to finish processing. This is critical as it needs to be finished processing before it gets pulled to your SmartChat™.
- Once finished, the content will be automatically added to your SmartChat™ knowledge base.
- Now comes the fun part – you now get to manage the privacy settings and arrange your tags the way you like them.

“Storytell can read and change all your data on all your websites” message when installing Storytell Chrome Extension
What does this message look like?
This permission is required by nearly every Chrome extension, it simply means that we have access to the DOM, which we require in order to see the content on the page to run Storytell.
Interestingly, this article notes that other browsers like Firefox grant this permission to extensions by default, whereas Chrome requires that extensions explicitly ask for those permissions
Why isn't the Storytell Chrome extension running on my content?
First, to enable the Chrome extension, you'll need to click on it like so -- watch this gif or see the image below
If the Chrome Extension is activated and it won't run on the content you're viewing, see below for reasons why:
- Compatibility issues: The Storytell Chrome extension may not be able to run on your content:
Here is the list of the content Storytell currently does not support:
- Non-hosted PDFs (the PDF would have to be hosted by a website like this one which is hosted by careshelter.org. We can't view PDFs you have saved on your computer at this time because it is technically not a website, so the Chrome extension can't access it. )
- Images
- Google Docs
- Google Spreadsheet
- YouTube videos without closed captions
But, here’s a workaround for you!
- If you want to process a long block of text, you can use Storytell SmartChat™ to do it -- learn more about SmartChat™ here
- Outdated extension: Update your Chrome browser to ensure you are running the latest version of the Storytell Chrome extension.
- Browser issues: The Storytell Chrome extension may not be able to run on your browser.
- Content restrictions: The content you are trying to run the extension on may have restrictions that prevent the extension from running, such as a paywall or privacy restrictions.
- Installation issues: The Storytell Chrome extension may not have been installed correctly. Here's a guide on how you install it.
What happens if I disable cookies on my browser? Can the Chrome extension still run?
If you disable cookies on your browser, the Storytell Chrome extension will not run.
The Chrome extension may not be able to save your settings, preferences, or login information, which cause it to not function at all.
Additionally, some websites may not function correctly or may not be accessible if cookies are disabled. It is recommended to keep cookies enabled on your browser to ensure the best user experience.
Here are the steps to enable browser cookies in Google Chrome:
- Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser.
3. Click on the Settings option.
4. Under the Privacy and security section, click on Cookies and other site data.
5. Toggle the Allow sites to save and read cookie data option to the right to enable cookies.
- If you want to enable third-party cookies, toggle the Block third-party cookies option to the left to disable it.
- If you want to enable cookies for a specific site, click on Add under the Allow section and enter the site's URL.
6. Once you have enabled cookies, you should be able to have Storytell Chrome Extension function properly. If you have any issues, you can try refreshing the page you're on or restarting the browser or clearing your browser's cache and cookies.
